Shop Local This Valentine's Day!

The majority of us participated in "Small Business Saturday" just after Black Friday this past holiday season. Although it's a great gesture to practice over the holidays, it's really something that should be practiced year round.

The majority of people order Valentine's Day Flowers from big box floral companies (Teleflora, FTD, etc) around this time of the year. Don't do it!

Shop At Your Local Floral Shop! You Won't Regret It.

There has been an industry struggle over the past few years in regards to local florists and the national wire services (Teleflora, FTD, etc). Many people don't realize that when they order flowers or gift from these wire services as opposed to directly from the local businesses, the following happens:

· The local florist that is filling the order is only receiving 40% of that sales transaction from the big box wire services. They are essentially losing money on many orders that come through this system, but at a time when floral shop sales are down, they take what they can get.
· The photo that most people see on wire service websites is not what your recipient will receive. The photo on the website is obviously created to draw the person in to make the purchase and is often showed at the "maximum bloom point". The maximum bloom point is the point where a fresh floral arrangement opens to full bloom and it is nearing the point where the flowers will no longer look fresh in just a few days to follow. When people receive the actual order, they are usually much fresher (but the flowers are slightly more closed) than what is pictured to ensure that they last longer. This does tend to upset people as they think that are getting ripped off by not getting exactly what is pictured on the website.
· Also, many large wire services work out of local warehouses during the busy holiday times. These arrangements are created in an assembly line style by people with little to no floral design experience. Or with some companies like 1-800 Flowers, they are often sent via UPS or Fedex to the recipient in no water and are not the greatest quality as they are tossed around in a delivery truck.
When you order from a local floral shop, you are working directly with the professional designers who will create the gift for your recipient because they have a passion for the business and for the art of floral design. As you shop around for the best Valentine's Day gift, remember to support your local businesses. They are here to help you and look forward to creating a great gift for your recipient on this romantic holiday and the others throughout the year.

Just Had To Share This....

Good Morning All!

We are working on some great new posts that should be done in the next week or so. They will feature some local boutiques that you probably didn't even know existed in our area.

But in the meantime, I thought this might be nice to share as we start the new year. For me, this goes out to my female friends and family members who seem to think that having a boyfriend is the most important thing in the world right now (they are at "that" age).

Welcome 2013!!... Now Let's Talk About Shopping.
We Need Your Help!

We hope that everyone had a safe and fun celebration last night as we said goodbye to 2012 and welcomed 2013 with open arms.

Now that our blog has become a little more well known, we need your help!

We would like to feature a local shop or boutique every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in 2013! We know there are quite a few out there and instead of us just "googling" some options, we would like your suggestions!

Is there a small shop in your area that you just LOVE? Tell us about it in the comments section! We will contact the shop and do a complete posting on the store, what they offer, who the owners are and why do they do what they do.

So it's up to you! Let us know what shops you just can't live without!

A New Style of Bridal Show.... And It's Quite Fancy!

There is a new style of wedding show that is hitting the Milwaukee area. It involves beautiful design and..... cocktail attire?

That's right! This might be one of the fanciest bridal shows to hit Milwaukee.

It takes place right here at the Milwaukee Art Museum on January 14th, 2013.

"The Artful Bride Event" features some of the area's best companies in the wedding business. If you are looking to "keep things local" for your big day, then may we suggest that you start here.

Time to Plan Your New Years Party!

New Years Eve is less than a week away and after asking some of my friends about the big plans for the night, almost all of them said that the were just going to stay home since it was just getting too expensive to go out. I totally agree as we do the same thing.

Here are some tips for planning a great New Years Eve party at home:

Plan some games for guests. Nothing too cheesy, but something that might help some people get to know each other if they don't already.

Create a fun playlist of music of the year's most popular songs. People will recognize them and think that this is a fun way to recap the year in music.

Check out some of these other tips for Real Simple:

Start a new party tradition. Have everyone bring a favorite article or symbolic item from the past year. Collect all the items, and make a collage or have everyone take a picture of their item in a photo-booth type of set up and create a photo-book of the guests with the memorable items.

What types of New Years Eve traditions do you and your friends already participate in?

It's Engagement Season! Order Those Custom Items Early

Everyone will know someone who will get engaged this holiday season. As a wedding planner and floral designer, I encourage all new future brides to PLAN EARLY!

Even if you don't have the money right now to order everything right away, create a timeline that will show you how long it might take to order custom items such as favors, banners, save the dates and these hand painted custom champagne flutes.

Budget and timeline templates are available on theknot.com.

As a small business owner myself, I encourage the new "brides to be" to make an honest attempt to shop local. In the end, you will create some great relationships with local business owners who will work very hard to make your big day very special.
